How to do a seamless repeating displaced pattern?

I tried searching, but none of my guesses came up with anything.

Here’s what I’m trying to do: Mask off part of a project, and apply a seamless tiled pattern to it.

I’ve seen people do chainmail and the like, so I know its possible, I just don’t know what tool to tinker with, and couldn’t locate anything in zclassroom.

It look like noisemaker might do it, but it didn’t respect the masking I had, and added noise to everything. (Plus of course we are still awaiting the new noisemaker plugin.)

Is there a thread where someone posted the workflow for this?

It seems the more I learn, the more I uncover that I still need to learn… LOL!

I posted a similar thread 2 days ago without any replies so far. I mentioned one workflow in it to get details through masking but I’m not sure if that is the proper way to do it unfortunately.

I’m too lazy currently to re-write my workflow so I’ll just paste the link here:

I’m hoping however someone will reply to either thread and give a better solution.

I remember someone discussing their workflow doing chainmail a year or so ago, but unfortunately, that wasn’t in the troubleshooting forum.

I’m sure the info is here somewhere, but finding out the exact zbrush phrase to search for is the problem. Youtube videos haven;t helped either.

I’ll look at your link, and see if that might be a solution I can use.

Yeah, actually I saw your post when hunting for a solution. That wouldn’t work on my current project though.

Hopefully someone else will chime in with a link to someone’s solution soon.

Maybe it’s this thread you are looking for?

No, that wasn’t it, but that might be a step in the right direction. is there some trick to get noisemaker to only fill noise on a mask?

EDIT: That looks like it should have been included in zclassroom! There’s amazing stuff in there!

There’s no trick to it. Noise will only be applied to an unmasked area, but you won’t see that until you ‘Apply To Mesh’.

I’ll have to try it again. I did it yesterday after doing some detailing on a mesh, and when i applied the noise, it applied to the entire subtool, as if there was no mask at all. I wonder if it might be a bug, though I don’t recall seeing that mentioned anywhere.

I can see that that link you sent me has enough good stuff in it for me to spend hours on learning. MANY thanks!

EDIT: I just tried it again, and it is working now. I might have been working too long in one zbrush session, and needed to reload and clear things out. (I was in it for about 6 or 7 hours yesterday.)
