Live Boolean can be used to cut pieces out of a mesh. Since this image looks like it’s only cutting out two puzzle pieces, you could use Live Boolean on those, and then simply draw the lines that separate the other pieces onto the surface as a texture or polypaint, then mask those lines, invert, and perform a negative Inflate operation (Deformation > Inflate). This would create the illusion of the mesh being separate pieces.

I would paint the sphere with the shape of the puzzle pieces, in black and white.
Then convert the polypaint to a mask, and invert the mask and deform>size or deflate.
Maybe convert the mask to a polygroup so that you have the edges of the pieces as its own group…
something like that would be my solution
