How many spots for facial mocap in Avatar?

Does anybody know how many spots on the face are used for capturing the facial expressions in Avatar Movie, and does anybody know the positions of this spots?
Thanks in advance.

Those are a thing of the past. Today you scan meshes for morph targets in realtime. Fiddled with a scanner like that recently. Blows your socks off. Like a video camera, instead of a movie you get meshes out of it… Forget the “points”. Thing of the past.

So that explains that weird looking sphere that an actor sits in and shines like 50 lights at a persons face? What is that technique called?

OK, I suppose that are now more sophisticated techniques. But if you give me few thousands dollars I will buy it and us it, but for now I would use points for mocap for my project, so I would appreciated if you answer me on my thread question

i think the answer is that they didn’t use any spots in Avatar for the facial mocap. unless you’re looking for info on how they used to do it with spots, but the question sounded Avatar specific.

Yeh, I’m fairly sure that facial capture has used a sort of translucent powder for a long time now (I think Polar Express).

I have no experience in facial capture, but I would go for a point structure that matches (to some degree at least), your animatable base mesh.
