How do you Preserve Poly groups ?

If you have set up poly groups for either workflow ease or Crease edges, and you need to redo, or make uv’s in an external package, and re import.

Is there a way to preserve the groups ?

I ask this b/c there doesn’t seem to be an easy way to create them, so it is annoying when they disappear when you re import an obj on the lowest subdivision of your tool.

Thank you !

Whatever groups are assigned to the imported model are what you’ll have after the import.

To preserve the groups when you export from ZBrush, make sure that Tool>Export>Grp is active. (Which is the default setting.) But different programs handle grouping differently so I can’t give instructions for what to do outside ZBrush to preserve those groups. (Or assign new groups.)

thank you for your reply

Just knowing what you said will make me figure it out for next time. I already finished the model i was working on for work
I went a subtool rout which wasn’t ideal, but worked anyway for what I was doing

but you are right , in Maya I did notice an additional node from Zbrush
I discovered it because it was renaming my OBJ when I brought them into Faogen

the node caused it to be renamed with a semi colon , which interfered with faogen’s export
I had to delete it

I was discovering other oddities today with uv’s being separated from there shells , but that is another problem for another time

anyway if i figure it out I will post it here

Thanks

AW

OK aurick

my problem was that I didn’t have groups checked in the OBJ import settings.

All is fine now.

Thanks
