How do you control spacing when you have an alpha repeating?

Noob question, but I just can’t find the controls. I am simply trying to find the proper control for the spacing when you drag an alpha across the sreen with freehand brush. (Similar to the stitch brush in the way it repeats.) I’ve tried lazy brush with a step of 2, but that just has the alpha repeat one right after the other with no spacing in between.

So, how would you increase or decrease the distance between repating alphas?

I know if you go into the stroke pallet and enable Roll it will have the effect you’re after, but I don’t know how to control the spacing other than to have more spacing in the alpha image itself. I’m sure there’s a way to control it, I just don’t know what it is off hand.
