How do I make Normal and Displacement maps within ZBrush?

Hello guys,

I need to transfer my ZBrush over to Maya, but since Maya can’t handle the high polygon count I’ve been told that I need to transfer a lower level subdivision model into Maya and use Normal or Displacement maps to get my details to show.

I’ve been following a tutorial but the version of ZBrush the guy is using is really old and so there’s a lot of things he does that I can’t follow. Can anyone help?

I’m using ZBrush4R3 at the moment.

Well, first you should update to 4r5. It is free and has a ton of updates that really improve your workflow, etc.

2nd, go to a low subD level, then go to tool.normal map and make a new normal map. I am assuming your lowpoly model is unwrapped. If it isn’t, you will need to give it a proper unwrap either in Maya or Z using UVmaster.

There are vids and documentation on both of these inside of the zClassRoom.

Also make sure you choose “Adaptive” for your maps- supposedly gives better detail. For the Disp map choose 32 bit change mid value form .5 to 0 and change DP Sub Pix from 0 to 2. In Maya turn off Bump filter texture
