How do I create filigree or carved models?

I’m trying to figure out how to create the effect Joshua Harker used on his Skull Project (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/joshharker/crania-anatomica-filigre-me-to-you).

I’ve been searching for tutorials but I’m not even sure what to call the technique. I imagine that what I want to do is start with a hollow model (like a shell) and carve away to create my pattern but I have no idea how to start.

Any suggestions for resources I could check out or tips or tricks? Thanks for your time.

You could do it like this:
Apply a mask on your model - Store a Morph Target - Deformation Inflate - Morph Target CreateDiff

That looks pretty cool. I’ll have to give that a try and see if I can make it work. Thanks for the suggestion.

Anyone else have a suggestion?

its probably just a simple mesh extraction by way of masking
