How can I return to EDIT MODE (T) a figure already shaped?

Step 1:
I imported an OBJ figure already shaped in 3D Studio.

Step 2:
When I want to use the smoodge Brush, I have this problem

I switch into another MODE and shape the figure but I can’t go back to EDIT MODE in order to scale it, rotate it, etc

once you use 2.5D brushes you can’t go back into 3D.
