How can I make the basic materials transparent when sculpting

Hi, I would like to be able to apply some translucent materials to some sub tools while I am actively sculpting.

I am looking to get the effect of the Green Glass matcap that is available to download from the Pixologic site, in more colors, with more transparency.

I did see how to modify the color of the green glass material with the hue modifiers. But there is no transparency slider, so I cant seem make this material more translucent?

I tried to work with the non matcap materials like jellybean and use the transparent slider
but I could not get any translucent effect ? Wondering why this is?

Thanks

Material transparency is a legacy feature that doesn’t work in Edit mode. If you want to make subtools transparent while you sculpt you are limited to either the Transform>Transp and Ghost buttons or, for working with reference images on the grid, the Draw>Fill Mode.

For info on the grids:

Thanks for that info Marcus.
