How can i adjust edges?(make more sharp and straight)

Hi2all Zbrush guru.

I know that Zbrush modeler is for organics, but i whant to make tech models in it too.

Maybe it is better to do it in Rhino(and i can), but I’m tired of it.

I started to build Nokia 5140 model in Zbrush, but i cant make edges straight and sharp enough. Enybody knows how to do it?

Big thanx anyway.

have a look at 'noba’s post -‘pixoracer’ - earlier on this forum

hi Trogwart,

check zbrush2 help (included tutorials). There is one about zbrush logo creation. I dont remember name of that function (edge loops perhaps). That could be helpfull.

Vox, maybe you mean “crease” - it is not useful in my case, becouse it is not low poly,(it can be done in 3dsMax or Maya even better) but sculpting with high poly. It is also the same with edge loop. :frowning:

ron m,
thnx, but not userful too :frowning:

i dont need to model from sharp form, i need to make sculpted edges to be sharp… heh, is there no method?
:frowning:

Look the last Post
Zsphere with a mesh density of 1 can give some straight sharp mechanical form

Hey there, Trogwart

Nothing is impossible, and I guess if you can’t do it with crease or edge loop, there are two more options left that I can think up so far:

1 - First of all you must subdivide your mesh 'couse it looks like it is not to high poly, then drop it ‘Projection Master’ ( and as you do it you must select the deformation on), turn on ‘zadd’ and select a small ‘Z Intensity’ (like 7 I dunno…) and select the line to draw ( for your brush you could use the single layer brush) and draw the lines to make your sharp edges, and you can always smooth it away wher you don’t need it after picking your mesh up again.

2 - You can try to partially hide the mesh and use ‘flatten’ at the deformation options to create sharp edges.

That’s the way I mostly do it becouse I don’t prefer to start with a very low poly model 'couse you never know where exactly you’ll want your sharp edges until you get there. Check my last post to see the results

Also I gotta tell ya, the Projection Master is the greatest and the most usefull tool to me so far in the Z2. It really makes the difference  .
Let me know if you could use the info, and if it works for ya  .

Many thanx for all of you! Community
of your forum is very kind and responsive.

Frenchy Pilou: tnax for you advices.

1)starting from sharp primitive may be userful in some cases, but if i have complex shape (power of zbrush in sculpting such difficult forms, low poly, no offence meant, is better to model not in Zbrush), and for my model, this method is not perfect.

2)The next way - to mask and flaten parts of model, i tried but it cant be used in my case (to sharpen edges and flaten surfaces) at all. :frowning:

3)Z2 brushes…pitch and else. Ok. If you paint with layer brush the stroke surface is great, and if you adjust it with pitch it becomes wery cool strait tech line. But! if you make pitch onto line painted with regular brush (and it is you every time need brush for model complex things) the result is poor :frowning: Conclusion: I must paint straight lines, is there a

ruler in sculpting mode?

Some way to connect two points on the surface with line, like in projection master mode (it modeling proces it is not wery userful, if model has complex shape).

Thanx to all! I will try to make something with proj master and ruler…it seems to be only way :frowning:
(not as fast and comfortable as i expect from Zbrush)

U-Jin, your advice is userful, thanx, maybe projection+ruler modeling is not so bad…
(in any case it seems to be only the way)

I think what you’re looking for is the Telephone tutorial in the Practical Guide. Edge loops could be the way to go I think as you can use them to make sharp edges…

Sleeperservice, please read the beginning of topic before writing…edge loop do not match in such case. You can use them before sculpting at high-poly shape, not after.

Please dont offer low poly model methods. I CAN model lowpoly in maya, max, lightwave, silo, etc. All of them better in lowpoly then Zbrush. I whant only to sculpt in Zbrush.

Erm, that’s the point with edgeloops. You can set them up in the lowpoly version, then when you sub-divide to a higher res they retain their sharpness. (if you use the double edgeloop method detailed in the tutorial). Edgeloops are not just lowres or highres.

Alternatively, if you have a hires model already (which you don’t want to restart) then draw in the creases where you want them (which you’ve more or less done in the picture you show) then use the Pinch brush on them to sharpen the creases…

not sure if this would be what you are looking for either but

either stenciling or creating an alpha (can’t remember now if you tried that already) and inverse inflate might do what you are looking for although won’t be as sharp and precise as an edgeloop. but maybe worth a try anyways as you can use the smooth and pinch tools after.
