Hopkins Face (WIP)

Hi,

I’m new to Zbrush and so I thought that any idea’s, hints, and suggestions would be great on my first project as it goes along. So critisem is very welcome

I grabbed the sample face from Pixologic’s download center as my first assignment is to be a face of a famous actor with a fair amounts of rincles. At the moement I have just blocked out and forumed the face to the basic characteristics of Anthony Hopkins and am planning on continuing to doing so until I am satisfied and will then move towards more detail.

As you can tell I’m in the very begining stages and will be continusly updating this thread as I go on. So once again suggests are greatly welcomed.

Heres an update on my progress, I’m doing this between other projects so its a slow progress. Once again C&C is welcome.

Still pushing along. I’ve started over like 3 times or more. Any suggestions?

Heres an update at were I am currently. I believe I am close to getting the base features and I will be starting wrinkles and blemishes. I have read on the forums that the best way to approach that is by using alpha mattes, any other suggestions?

Now this is really moving along. Check your ears. Can see it’s Anthony Hopkins! Kudos!

Good start. But I looked at the thumbnail of your last picture:
see the difference in jaw? Also eyebrow is abit off.

His head needs a bit of elongating, it’s a bit stumpy

Thankyou guyz for your feed back, I’ll put it to good use and have something for this weekend to show my advancement.

I can’t see any image. Can you post the link, please?

I do not now why you are unable to see the pictures for I upload them unto ZbrushCentral itself when I post. It may be the server or your brower.

Ok I did alot of facial tweeking, I’ve elongated the head and worked on the eyebrows, ears and jaw as suggested which made it look so much better, thankyou  . I would also like to thank Mr.Monster for his suggestions VIA email his trick to help measure out porportions from the original picture has helped alot. Though I find it trying to match the pose of the picture, does Zbrush have a way to “save” the position of your model once you found a position you like so after moving it you can just click a button and your model would snap back to that position?

Anyways as you can tell I have started making details on the model. An interesting process since I have never done it before. Does anyone have suggestions, tuts, or methods they like to use when they start doing the finer details on their model?

Take your time with the detail. And watch that you don’t distort the main shape to much. I would save a morph target now. And you can pull detail from photo references too if you use the images as projections.

i he looks very much like the picture, thats great

Your making amazing progress. I’m not to sure about saving the position of the model though… maybe try saving the document and not just the tool? I don’t know, I’ve never tried. Again really good work.

For saving the position, you have markers for that. Draw the mesh, pres “M”, now when you go out of the edit mode, there will be a point in the middle of the mesh, pres it, and the model will snap into position.
I think that with the new update, you lost most of the similarity to hopkins  Dont go with the details yet, go as far with the main shape as you can :stuck_out_tongue: Focus on one part of the face at a time ;]

OrrieWalls@Center,

This is looking better…yea!
About what you asked in the PM.
I understand what your concerns are. I think you can just draw them and not zsub them. Others probably know beter than I.

Keep up the good work.

looking really good so far.

There are a few things I did notice though (not that it’s a big deal since it’s still a wip) the top eyelid, the fold of skin that overlaps the lid itself is a bit too high, especially on the outside edge of the eye.

And the tip of the nose on the bottom, it doesn’t seem to come down enough (if you look at the inside of the nostril you may see what I’m talking about).

But asside from those minor details, it’s looking very much like him, great work so far!

Thanks guyz for your suggestions and comments. I will take them into consideration and will have an update one Tuesday.

I totally understand that I should spend more time on the structure of the face before going off into detail but this is a class project that is quickly comming to a close and is needed to have certain aspects for marking. But the push has really made a nice learning curve.

Once again thankyou all for your advice

The morph targets really helped thanks wormball for the suggestion.

As for locking the position of the model I had a hard time trying to make it work and adventually stopped trying cause I needed to work on the project. I’m sure I will get it.

So here’s an update on the model. I fixed some of the base features so they they fit my referances better and then started detailing. I still have the hair to do and I still need to clean up some of the places but any suggestions would be great.

~ P.S. I know I’m rushing but the due date is comming up quick and so part of it will be suffering.

Hello:
I would like to suggest you few things to help you.
I only use to make coment if the work worth it, and the likenes goes well.
I would recomend you that you take a second look to the eyes, they look so wide to me, and the inside corners are to open, maybe a more triangular shapes would be better, the second thing it is the mouth, one again take a second look to it.

I would like to remember a saying that in that case is perfect, the portraits are the art of the detaills!!
I´m trying to say that it is good to concentrate in few caracteristica detaills of the model to get the likeness, for example:
The neck it is not so important like the corners of the mouth or the eyes, or the wrinkles on the forehead.
Hope this help.

OrrieWalls@Center,
This has come a long way. The profile especially. I am not sure how many photos you have for reference. But, if you don’t have this one, I am including it.

I think it’s one of the most detailed ones I have see of him to date. Enjoy
