Honeycomb sphere (and other objects) – possible in zbrush?

Hi guys,

Did any of you ever try to do something like this in zbrush? Is it possible to take a shape (and not only simple shapes), apply a pattern, and get the base shape but made out of that pattern? Like the honeycomb sphere example attached?

I’ve played around a bit with the idea via subtool extract but nothing decent ever came out of that. Any help and tips would be much appreciated.

The only way you could achieve this in ZBrush is with a very dense mesh. That’s because otherwise the topology would always be fighting against the pattern and you’d not have smooth edges. Also in order to apply a pattern you would need very good UVs, without distortion, but you couldn’t avoid any seams.

The image shows a quick example. All I did was apply the hextile pattern using the NoisePlug, masked the mesh with the noise then pressed Tool>Visibility>HidePt.

To get a result as good as your example I imagine you would need to use a program that can generate a patterned mesh, so that the topology followed both the form and the pattern.
