'HOME-MADE' 3D Solid Object Printer

Howdy!

Here’s an interesting kit you can purchase and use to build your own Rapid Proto printer. Open source code. About $700.

that looks amazing!!! I am real close to thinking about getting one brill thanks for the knowledge!!

honestly those things are useless for anything you’d ever create in zbrush, the resolution is complete crap.
unless you just want to make a basic shape of your model and then do traditional sculpting, puttying on top of that.
i hate that they even call it a printer, its a extruder, you’d be better off with some DIY CNC machine.

ahhhh shame… looked like a nice idea… do you think they might be looking into sorting the resolution out …?

i suppose its cheap and the model its self might be sculpt-able with tools after the initial print is made?.. still i am so keen to be producing my laptop creation i will dig a little deeper but thanks for the warning

The technology of the Makerbot is the same as FDM (fused depostition modeling) and even the pro machines using this technology have miserable resolution. These “kits” will become better in terms of resolution & material as time goes on but it may be awhile until we get something that can approach the level of detail of a ZB model. Best technologies on the current market are Objet & Envisiontec but these are way too pricey for the casual user. This industry has gotten quite competitive & is starting to spawn new approaches to 3D printing. Hope this leads to a cheaper way to do things better, it would be nice to see 3D printers on your desktop as common as inkjet printers!

yes that would be amazing!! I could see my self still getting one of these as they are open source and if one wizard gets hold of it you never know

but also to get a general form from a zsculpt cast that to wax and then work tools onto that saves heaps of time as a sculpture to this will tickle my mind for a while no doubt…!!

Waste of time and money. Seriously. A proof of concept. Not more.
