Please do this try: move the end of the tube behind the hippo, will be more funny 
If he puts the hose in his ass (as you’re probably suggesting) it will inflate starting from behind which is not desirable in this case as the author wants to show the head/face.
That’s right but the face of the Hippo should not be touched. The strenght will be such face with the hose disappearing behind him.
If you think about it considering the air distribution, probably it’s already uncorrect. I mean you can’t have such big balloon for the face and a completely deflated area for the legs, but I don’t want talk about this because in CG you can do whatever you want, that’s fine. For this reason he could simply move that tube behind the hippo and…just laugh…without too much thinking 
However mine its just an idea, it’s the first thing came to mi mind when I saw the still
