From what i can tell displacement is not casting shadows onto itself, however it does take into account the SSAO, which helps. But, that is a good point, without the assistance of the normal map the displacement by itself does not hold up. Im basically using it for silhouette and secondary form. I know in certain engines displacement is capable of self shadowing but it doesnt seem like it in toolbag.
The Samaritan demo is sweet for sure. I think with some tweaking and the right combo of maps you can get a similar result out of toolbag, the super sampling helps too for exporting screen shots. my next test is hair.
