Hiding polygons while doing retopo

Hi, I am not able to hide polygons while doing retopo. I am holding ctrl+shift and dragging a green rectangle around the head. New geometry looks good but the original dyna mesh does not get hidden properly. Plus I get frequent crashes while doing that. I can’t retopo inside of the mouth if I don’t hide a part of the mesh.

If you Append a Zsphere to your mesh and retopo that way, then hiding sections of your mesh is not a problem.

But the first tutorial on youtube says I have to create a clean ZSphere and then append the mesh to the sphere. Hm, so you say you can retopo the other way around ? I’ll try that. Thanks.
