Use Ctrl+shift and drag to hide, if you release shift you invert that.
That way you can seperate the Polys you want, convert them into a Polygroup (Tool/Polygroup(Group Visible). Once you got your Polygroups you can seperate your parts with a simple Ctrl+Shift+click
