Yep ZBrush newbie myself, and almost gave up for a while, when it got a bit hairy. Glad i didn’t though.
Here is what i would recommend now to other beginners:
-
Buy the program. Yes, it’s a strain to spend the money - was for me anyway. But the ability to easily save models (“tools”) - since you will often ruin them with newbie mistakes, will really cut out a lot of your frustration.
-
Download the excellent manual and read it “thoroughly” - that is, by having ZBrush open and by trying everything out, as you read about it. Hands-on learning beats only reading every time.
If you can stand it, do this twice, seperated by a few days. Seriously, this will help your long-term memory formation.
-
Review all the Zscripts. They are just great.
-
Dive in and try a real project. Make it a pretty simple one, but actualling doing a real project all the way through is the best way to hit up against the real problems you will really encounter when you “get serious”. I had to go back and start over 3 times, as i realized i had made “show-stopper” errors. But that just gave me more practice and improved my memory of how to do stuff.
Try for the attitude that problems are just more learning opportunities. If my experience is typical, you will have plenty of problems - but that’s good, because, well, how else are you going to learn?
Consult the QuickLinks and tutorials often - the answers really are in there. If you get badly stuck, the troubleshooting forum is excellent.
This high quality level of modeling is a lot harder than i had hoped it would be. But on the other hand, i’m finding that i can actually do it! And the creative power is amazing!
Another thing i’m finding is that a lot of my problems come from my ignorance of the basics of modeling and texturing. So learn as much as you can about the jargon and technology shared by all modeling programs.
As in learning Adobe Photoshop, it’s all very fine to learn the many tools in the app, but how do you learn when and why to use them? That’s where your understanding of the basics of the technology is needed - to guide you in what to do next to get the effect you want.
