hey guys

Hey guys im a teenage guy thinking of doing 3d illustration and art for a career in movies and games and i was wondering if zbrush would be a good investment for me to investigate the possibilities of the proffession?
and whats peoples views on mouse or GT, ive heard that its just as good to have a mouse than a GT for photoshop but im not sure for zbrush?
any comments are welcome

Well, I believe that depends on what exactly you mean by 3d illustration. I typically think of 3d and illustration as separate things. 3d being modeling/sculpting and on the other hand illustration, though it may contain 3d elements in it, is usually a 2d image (most likely a painting or drawing) that tells a story. If you are referring to more of the modeling/sculpting side then I’d say it is definitely worth investing some time with zbrush and other 3d apps such as maya/max etc. If you are leaning more towards illustration then I believe you would be better served by focusing on learning programs like photoshop/corel painter, but it would be worth at least checking out zbrush’s trial version. I believe it is an older version of zbrush so it may not have all of the newest tools, but it will give you a sense of the program and what you can accomplish with it.

As for using a mouse vs a tablet, personally I believe what you have heard is incorrect or at least incomplete at best for both photoshop and zbrush. Technically as long as you are a good artist it doesn’t really matter what tool you use to create, but you might as well choose the tool that is going to make your task easier. While you can achieve similar results with a mouse, a tablet makes the same process simpler, easier, and by far more efficient. Unless you can not afford a tablet there really is no good reason to make things harder for yourself simply so you can say it was done with a mouse, especially when you are trying to develop your skills as an artist.

If you would like to get a tablet, I would recommend sticking to the Wacom brand. The bamboo series of tablets are relatively cheap and are excellent for a first tablet. If you can afford it though, the intuos tablets are what is typically used by professionals in the industry.

thanks for the comment i will consider it but my budget is a bit tight at the moment, i didnt really know what i ment by 3d illustration either. i just liek the look of the stuff you guys to and i think it would be good fun to try it and also possibly try a career in the field probably towards games and movies.
thanks…Moofe
