if i wanted to sculpt scratches and dents in like a metal chestplate for example what would be the best brush alpha etc to use

The Slash brush is a good one for scratches.
Ultimately, though, this is a question that you’re going to best answer for yourself. Take time with a simple object to go through each of the sculpting brushes and get a feel for how it works. That way you’ll be able to start choosing the right brush for various situations without having to ask and wait.
