Help with subdivision

Hi! First of all know that I’m a complete noob and this is one of my first models. So, I did a base with ZSpheres and began sculping and subdividing. Everything went ok until I reached subdivision 8, which was ok for the face but way too much for the body. So now it runs slow and I want to delete two or three levels of the body. If I had noticed before I should have masked the body and only subdivided the head. But now it’s too late, is there a way to delete it?
Thanks in advance

You can still slice and dice your model.

You can do the following to divide your model up into two seperate subtools. You can divide it into as many parts as you want but for now, just so you get the hang of it, we will leave it at two.

  1. Drop your model down to the lowest subdivision level. (It’s important you do this step.)
  2. Turn off perspective if you have it on.
  3. Rotate your model so you can clearly see where you want to cut it in half.
  4. Hold down Ctrl+Shift for selection rectangle (draw green rectangle) and select half of your model. Half should now be visible and the other half hidden.
  5. Go to Tool > Polygroups submenu and click ‘Group Visible’ button. Your model will now be two seperate polygroups.
  6. Hold down Ctrl+Shift and click on empty part of canvas to unhide the other half. Turn on Polyframe button (Shift+F) to see that your model has 2 seperate polygroups.
  7. Now to split your model into 2 subtools. Go to Tools > SubTools submenu and click ‘Groups Split’ button then click ‘OK’ on the dialog that pops up.

You now have 2 different subtools. You can keep the higher subdivision levels on 1 and delete some higher subdivbision levels on the other if that’s what you want to do.

Just use this as a “how to” then split your model up however you want using this method.

Edit: If you are going to split your model, it’s always better to put the split somewhere where the seam will be hidden i.e. by a belt or clothing. Splitting up your model into multiple subtools will allow you to have more subdivision levels on each subtool. Keep this in mind when designing your model. If you want lots of detail, the odds are you won’t get it with having just one subtool.

That worked perfectly! Thanks so much =D

Thanks zber2.

Its seems as I get problems you solve them for me…
