After researching some more I think the digital effects:
Echo
and
Ghost (luma key)
could get close to the effect in Pas de Deux
Anyone work with these two effects?
Yes, I would use Adobe After Effects and Premiere to do those effects with, but any editing/post production/compositors will have those.
Thanks
Do you know if the effects can be done from live footage (in other words non blue/green screen)
I don’t mine googleing but the word echo effect even with added digital film or filmmaking turns up music echo effects
Yes the effects can be used on unedited footage, but the effect would be overwhelming. Fortunately you can stencil out the video portion you want to ghost and then add the effect to the composited piece.
Thanks again jaystein777
It’s a bit tedious but more repetitive work than difficult work. You would create a mask to isolate your subject, and basically create a duplicate of your footage this way. Then you can compose the original and the ‘ghost’ again and have that nice effect. I did a few interesting shots like this and threw in some re-timing which is something the film makers at that time would have a really hard time with. That means that my ghost sped up and slowed down as I found fit, and the original as well. I timed the action to music and the ghost to effects. Very cool effect and people liked it a lot. All you need is footage and After Effects CS4 or something similar. To get an idea what is possible check out videocopilot.net. They have a variety of free tutorials. And great contents.

Thanks Lemo the videocopilot.net site is
I looked at about all of the 93 tut video’s. I didn’t find one with the masking for ghosting and/or echo per say. But a lot of info there at that site.
Thanks for taking the time to post the timing tip and the link.
