Help with first model?

Hey you guys, I am still on the fence between mudbox and zbrush. For some reason sculpting I find feels nicer in zbrush? Dont know why…but I am in a quandry as to make this model from a reference photo and it being my first model I am eager jump into zbrush and start having fun…I would like to model out this old picture frame:

Old Picture frame

I model out a rectangular cube in maya import as obj - but when I step up in sub d levels it obviously goes into a pebble shape…

And when I try to use image plane…,I try to take the opacity down, but the model remains fairly dark so I cant really see all of that lovely detail…

Can anyone suggest some workflow advice…I am competely new to zbrush and I just want to get started. No better way to learn…Thanks!

Hi there,

this should help with your Base :):http://www.pixologic.com/docs/index.php/Joseph_Drust

About the image Plane ??? Can you post a screengrab?

Hey thanks for that i will check it out in detail tomorrow:

I hope you can see that in the example that the detail of the frame is kind of dark against the big round ball of red clay. (the mesh, had to think there)

what do you think I am doing wrong?

Hmm i am not sure if you are using the image plane tool that you can find in the default ZTool Folder that pops up when you open Lightbox.

If you are, you can change the transparency settings under Preference/Draw. Just play around and see what works for you. Also changing the Material might help.

Maybe you should rethink the way you are modeling this. You could easily make an alpha from that image, deform your mesh with it and then just refine it … just a thought to save you time and frustration

Hope that helps.

Hey nice…Thats a great idea…do you know of any tuts online with that workflow ? - cheers

Just for anybody else starting out there…with regards to alpha deformation - i found this neat tutorial
