Hello, first off I’m new to Zbrush and I’ve just started the online video tutorials and so far I’m at creating the vase. The only problem is when I extract the middle and go to begin sculpting I am unable to sculpt on the extracted mesh. The only part of it that I can sculpt on is very close to the top which means I can’t add any detail to the middle or bottom
Any help would be appreciated thanks
When you use the “extract” function, it creates a new subtool on your Tools->Subtool pallet. In Zbrush, you can only work on one subtool at a time. So go to your Subtool pallet and click on the extract mesh to sculpt it (it will be named “ExtractN” where N is a number.)
If you want to join all your visible sub-tools (meshes) into a single tool that can be sculpted anywhere without switching tools, use “Merge Visible” to create a merged mesh. It will be in your Tools pallet named “Merged_xxxx” where xxxx is the name of your topmost subtool.

I have it selected but I can only sculpt on the top part when I sculpt on any other part of it nothing happens : /
Check to make sure you don’t have a mask turned on. Tool->Masking->Clear or Ctrl-shift-A.

A HA! The mystery is solved! Thanks
GAH Now when I try to use zproject nothing happens
I click move and draw the line over from my vase to the face I’m trying to project onto it, but when go back to draw and click on the vase nothing happens
Are you transferring from a subtool or the canvas?
Look at these tutorials and see if your setup is correct:

The way described in http://www.pixologic.com/docs/index.php/Tutorial:ZProject_and_SubTools works but for some reason the way that is used in the tutorial video doesn’t. Thanks for linking these tutorials though
