Help! Problem with retopology!

Hello guys, im having a lot of trouble with a new model…

It’s just a head, that i started of a sphere…

Well, basicly, i got to about 8mil polys and since i started of a sphere, most of it is on the top of the head and under the skull, now i need to retopo it so i get most of the polys on the face/ears and make the model lighter.

However, i have NO IDEA on how to retopologise using zbrush.

Ill post some pics of my mesh right now.

Any help ?

: )

Hi, thanks for the reply, i’ve checked the topic above, downloaded the .mov files showing some nose jobs however things still dont work for me.

I’m posting a screenshot so you can see whats going on.

humm… any toughts?

While moving the zsphere points on your topology theywill not stick to the model. Zbrush is intended for a straight forward retopology, knowing moreless how your topology will look. When you move a point you should do it in the tree axes…

And that screenshot doesn’t shows much…

things still dont work for me
What extactly doesn’t work for you?

It looks like perspective is turned on to me. Turn off perspective see if that helps.

Ill try to turn off perspective and see if it works…

My major problem is that i get my models to a certain point (the one u saw above) but cant go beyond that (i can never finish it) cause im already at about 10-20mi polys and the mesh is crappy =/

Cant do a good job at the eyes/nose/ears plus fine details.

Well… It’s obvious that you want to retopo to get the most of detail you can with less poly…

What I am asking is

¿Have you any problem while painting or connecting the zSpheres over the base mesh?

¿Have you any problem with the adaptive skin?

¿Have you any problem with the projection?

yes for questions 1 and 3

When i have the setup to start the retopology (my old mesh -> zsphere -> riggng -> edit topology) and start creating the new points, they get all over the place and not where they are suposed to be…

Also, i want to keep the details of my old mesh and cant seem to do that…

This may be one of those times when a relative Noob to ZBrush 3 (Hey, I’m a Mac user that just got to be able to use Z3 not too long ago ) could be a bit more helpful than the more experienced peeps here. No offense intended…

Anyway, first off can you go back to a simpler subD level? Check your Geometry panel. If you can, then make a copy of the Ztool and name this copy with a name that’ll differentiate it from the original head mesh. I’ll call this copy “simple head” and the original “dense head”

Now on the Dense Head, polypaint the way you want the Mesh to be when you’re finished retopolizing the Simple Head. This is just to give you some idea of what the mesh will be like when you’re done and serve as a guide when you’re working on the Simple Head.

Just as the topology tutes all say, select the ZSphere tool and then click on the Rigging panel. Choose the Select Mesh button and choose the Dense Head tool. That’s the reference that will be used.

Next, on the Topology Panel, click on the Chose Topo button and click on the Simple Head Mesh. That’s the mesh that will be changed.

Using the Dense Head as a guide, edit the Simple Head topology to get the Eye, Ear and mouth edge loops you need to lighten up your Pologon load. Option/Alt click on the vertex-Zspehres to delete them. Just click on a vertex-Zsphere to select it. With a Zsphere selected, just click where you want the next vertex-Zsphere to be. If you’re not happy with the placement, then undo or Opt/Alt click to delete the sphere and reselect the Zsphere and try it again.

Once that’s all done, then use ZProject to transfer the high Poly detail to your new mesh.

Usually my workflow is to:

1-- create the figure/whatever in Zspheres.
2–Make Adaptive Skin.
3–Change the mesh to be more what I want it to be like.
4–Retopo at Level 2 (much like what I described above) to get the loops where I want them and to make sure that the mesh is pretty balanced, i.e. no horribly stretched out polys. It helps me to retopo at the begining, as I usually have a sketch of the concept I’m working on at hand, so I have a clue as to where to put the edge loops. And by doing the reopo at this early stage, I’m not fighting the topology when sculpting.
5–Sculpt, baby, sculpt.
6–Make incremental saves of the Ztool, so I can step back if I mess things up.

For a much better tutorial see Ryan K’s Topology Overview

Pick it up for ten bucks. It’s worth it.

Old mesh.

Zsphere…

Rigging > Select mesh (Old mesh)
Topology > Edit topology

Start painting dots (Here might be your problem, a screen shot would be nice)

- Be sure that your base zsphere is not selected (click outside of your model to deselect the points) - You can use symmetry (press X) - Click over the mesh = Paint a zsphere dot. There will be a red dot, that's the active point... to deselect it, click outside the model. - Alt+click erases points.

Dont move the points, unless you know exactly what you’re doing, it’s sometimes better to erase them and paint them again.

Projecting details:

Tool palette, projection subpallete (under rigging and topology)
enable projection. This will project the mesh details.

Hi res projection:

Tool pallete, adaptive skin subpallete (above rigging), change the density value.

Now on the Dense Head, polypaint the way you want the Mesh to be when you’re finished retopolizing the Simple Head.
This is also a good idea if you want to avoid erasing or moving dots

Still don’t know what your problem is… hope this helps

im going to try the tips from the last 2 posts and see how it goes… ill also try to take more screenshots or record a movie and post here…

Thanks a lot again…

BTW, i started another model (from a Cube) and would like you to coment (yes im a noob).

ps. i didnt start the ears and neck yet.
