how do I get noise to wrap around perfectly

A couple of things:

  1. You can’t unwrap a sphere (ph is an “eff” sound here) with a perfect grid. It isn’t mathematically possible. This is why world maps are distorted and funny looking.
  2. You can fake it with a cube that you run spherize on, but you have to do a few more steps, and without knowing what you actually want to do with your checker pattern other than view it, I can’t really give you a process on that. This also isn’t going to give you a perfect grid…so you might be out of luck if you need a perfect grid.

have you tried splitting the sphere into many groups then unwrapping with groups turned on?
not likely to solve it but it might get you closer to acceptable results.

also if a work around will do and you don;t really care about funky UVs and stuff, you can try mirror and weld.
unwrap, do your stuff, get one side right, then mirror it to the other.

it’s slap dash way and it might not work, but if you’re in a pinch it might be worth a try.
