HELP! On beginning sculpt

Hi,
I am trying my hand at ZBrush as I love the program, and sculpt in the real world, so I wanted to learn this, plus I will eventually be touching a little bit of this in school much later in my program(I’d like a headstart).

Anyway, I’m following along in the ZBrush Character Creation book(by Scott Spencer), and I just cannot get into it for some reason. I keep having problems either building up, smoothing or in this case all above. I tried to include all of the zbrush screen so you can see the settings.

When I build up with either clay or the standard brush, I get blocky (im at subD 4 and 5). I also get cuts that won’t blend together. The only tools he mentions to use are, inflate, smooth, standard, and the clay tool. I’m not having any luck. I’ve watched the videos a dozen times, slowed them down and analyzed his settings, but still can’t get the “flow” of this yet.

As you can see from the eye area, I start to smooth, and then there is an area that just wont smooth, so I try to remove and then I get a weird area. Not sure how to just blend this area all together and make it smooth like it is just at the top of the eye?

Help.

Hi srlake 314,
to get rid of those problem areas > in tranpose mode > ctrl click on your model > masking > inverse > visibility > hide points >
geometry > delete hidden . hope that helps !

I highly recommend “Introduction to ZBrush” at “zbrushworkshops.com”.

It’s available as a download rather than an interactive workshop. I’d been toying around with ZBrush for years but had laid it down for a few upgrades and was all but lost. I went through that course and it was worth the price considering how long it would take me to figure it out on my own. Ryan Kingslien does a great job of teaching it in an understandable way.

Hey Gary!

Thanks. I will try that. Can you think what might have caused this weird geometry and any suggestions as to preventing it utilizing “proper” techniques next time? I tried to do it just like the video, but just couldn’t get the same results.

Thanks!

Sean

Thanks for the reply. I checked out that site and it is indeed great. The audio quality is superb and the videos are very high quality.

I will be accessing those in the very near future. Right now I’m enrolled in an online course for computer animation, so time is of the up most importance to me right now. I’m trying to utilize every minute that I have to put into school, but any slow time(*which is far and few btwn), to learn on my own as well, to supplement my schooling.

Thanks again!

Sean

How do I access that menu? I couldnt find those options. Remember I’m only on chapter 4 of that book, :).

Thanks!
