Help : Need to convert normal map to displacement map

Hi guys ,

This is a bit of a desperate request does anyone know of a way to convert a Normal map to a Displacement map ?

Basically I have a low poly character with a normal map and id like to subdivide the mesh in my 3d app and use the normal map as a displacement map .

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

cheers

A normal map doesn’t have the information necessary to be processed for displacements. All it does it perturb the surface normals of the object to give an illusion of details – sort of like a fancy bump map.

Here’s an analogy: I can give you a good description for how to create a glass of what looks like Sprite. But without the actual recipe, you’re not going to have Sprite. A normal map contains instructions for how to make something look pretty close to the real thing, but it’s not the actual recipe for real depth.

Hehe. A funny way of describing the “problem”.

hi folks…ok, old thread, but what about using a replikator for the sprite?

the displacement generator mentioned in the above post really rocks.

Properly used, it turns your flatbed scanner into a 3d-scanner. Anyhow… it’s well worth checking out!

oh and btw. the nvidia plug does it too.
