(help) How to open ZTL from Zbrush 3.12 (MAC) in Zbrush 3.1 (PC)

Hi Guys,
I’ve just finished sculpted my model in zbrush 3.12 (MAC)
then I realize that zbrush 3.12 don’t have zmapper
and I don’t know another way to export normal maps
to 3dsmax.
I tried to open my ZTL file from zbrush 3.12 (MAC) in
zbrush 3.1 in PC, but it fail (error).

I hope someone can help me please, thanks a lot

You could use the Normal Map menu in the tools palette.

Richard

Export the highest and lowest levels as OBJ files.

In 3.1, import the lowest level OBJ and divide it to have as many subdivisions as the original model had. Then import the highest level OBJ, which will replace the current highest level. You’ll immediately have all the details from your Mac version.

I just did this recently myself. I brought a file from home to work where I use a Mac. Now a month later I want to update my file at home to continue working and it won’t open… I seen the fix but I have soo many subobjects that its going to be a PITA. Any hope for the future this is going to work without this trick?

.ztl exchangeability between windows and mac versions it’s really something that should be solved in next versions. Any word from support ? Thanks

the issue isn’t so much a mac/pc one its a 3.1/3.12. its that you are trying to use a higher version file on an older version application.

I’m trying to open a 3.12B (thus coming from a Mac) on a Zbrush 3.1 Windows PC.
However, I recall some time ago reading a post here where someone from Pixologic (well if memory assist me on this) was saying that the Mac version tool structure file was more complex and advanced than the Windows one, and therefore there was no solution at that (this) time.

yes but its not because its a mac ztl, its because its a higher version than windows, it has nothing to do with operating systems.
windows zbrush is at 3.1
mac is at 3.12
its no different than trying to open a zbrush 3.1 windows file inside of zbrush 2 windows. they’re not backwards compatible.

Well I see your point: so you say that the other way, i.e. opening a 3.1 on a 3.1x Zbrush should work ?

right. i believe ztools will but i think i read matcaps and probably other things like that won’t.

Well I do hope, however, that at some point in time we’ll have some “convergence” between versions so that tools will be exchangable at least with latest current versions.

As of today, latest current Windows version is 3.1 and Mac one is 3.12B: no matter what I’d expect compliance at least with those two.

Cheers

3.12 incorporates some features that are basically advance use of what’s coming with ZBrush 4. The big one in this case is the fact that 3.12 lets you apply textures to each SubTool. You can’t do that in the PC version, which can only recognize one texture for the whole model. This is a HUGE change in the file format itself, with the result being that the PC version has no clue what to do with a Mac ZTL.

We’ll be releasing ZBrush 4 in August for both PC and Mac. At that point, the PC version will catch up to the Mac and both will be moved forward together. Once the platforms are unified, you’ll be able to directly swap files between platforms.

Thank you very much aurick, that clarified things !

aurick: thank you so much for the tips, it’s work  yeah
