Hellfire Widow Contest at subdivisionmodeling.com

Just announced is the Hellfire Widow contest at subdivisionmodeling.com where you have a chance to win a prize pack including a license of Modo, Luxology apparel and other goodies like 3D Garage modo Signature Courseware from Dan Ablan.

Modo only. Meh.

No it’s not. Please read the rules. It says, if you use something else to make it clear.

These rules ? :

or this addendum that they changed at some point later when no one was interested, but still specify that Modo is to be the main tool used? :

Not to split hairs with you man, but you tried to play it off as if I didnt read the rules. My original response stands.

Meh.

Scott, you caught my error thank you. I spent the day scrambling to keep up with the event. I have corrected my errors, thank you for pointing them out.

The philosphy of using modo along with another 3D package should be clear now.

Thanks, and also I have been told that the first place winner also receives the modo 301 upgrade.

And to be fair… Let’s be clear that using modo was my idea to try and get people to break out of the box and try something new and perhaps something they are not used to.

Don’t try and make it a Luxology issue when in fact I was trying to make something unique to help provide an incentive for people to experiment.

It would make more sense if they let EVERYONE enter, with whatever software they have, and the winner gets free Modo. That way, they’re growing their userbase for future upgrades. Otherwise, it’s just selling/preaching to the choir.

Crusoe, yes I can appreciate that. However the "they’ you are referring to is me. I chose to have a modo-centric contest to get people to try something different, to expand what they might be used to and think outside the box.

Still, people are locked inside their box and unwilling to experiment, so to compromise I’m allowing people to use other 3D software.

SDM is a learning resource, we are not just a modeling forum. Our goal is to get people to think how they model, and how they approach things. I chose to try and do this by making people download a trial edition of software and work their best magic… imagine going to a job and they use XSI and you are used to Maya… guess what you’re forced to learn XSI so you adapt… I was hoping this contest would be an extension of that mindset.

However, to appease the angry mob I have made a compromise. I stand by what my objective and aim was and I feel bad for those that can’t see past the ‘prize’ and won’t try to expand their horizons… for fun’s sake even.

I do my best to explain in the shortest space the goals and objectives of the challenges… I will learn from this and try to do better, and I have corrected much of what peopled complained about to some extent. I am not inflexible and I have taken everyone’s comments seriously.

I hope you see what I am trying to do, and entice you to try and experiment. However, ultimately the choice is yours and I have done what I thought was enough to offer incentives to join in the fun.

well, I think it’s a fine contest, and even though I wont’ have time to participate I hope it’s a smashing success.

I think you’re getting such mixed reactions because it’s basically a modo-centric contest, but it’s posted on say… the ‘zbrush’ boards, or the ‘mudbox’ boards or whatever. I understand the idea of getting people to think outside the box, but when people have to download some trial software to get it going they usually get grumpy

testure, thanks for the compliment. I can see the point you make, and the contest is there for the willing. But, as a compromise I did open up the 3D software portion while retaining the key vision to some extent.

But I’m not going to run out and buy modo just to enter the contest…

But I might enter it if there is a chance of winning modo.

It still says the primary package has to be Modo, which, IMO, makes this whole thread spam on the Zbrush forums…

While the final image must include use in modo (using the free evaluation edition so no one has to buy a thing to enter, plus if you are going have a chance to win it, it could be a good idea to use it in advance.) Plus it gives everyone to some degree a level playing field.

You may as stated include all other apps in the workflow, the only stipulation is that you must state if and when you used another app. So no one is trying to sell anything in order to enter the contest, (Which would be pointless as why would you need to win it?)

Hence it is not ‘spam’ any more than if a zbrush competition was mentioned in any other forum would be. Many Zbrush users already use modo as part of a zbrush pipeline, as a matter of fact. But as it is not directly a Zb prize, hence why this was placed in the comunity section here.

Those that want a chance to win the prizes are welcome to enter. Those that feel its too much to ask to win the prizes, are free to their oppinions with no hard feelings.

well, like i said before i think it’s just a miscommunication. there are a few things that can be taken different ways, so it raises red flags in people’s heads. for example, the prize is a modo 301 upgrade. to many, the word ‘upgrade’ means you have to own the precursor, so to those who would download the trial to enter, they think they would still have to buy modo in order to use the prize.

like i said though, i think it’s a great contest and i’m sorry you guys got some weird responses to this cool idea… just some miscommunications is all. i just wish i had some time to enter it!

But if they read the prize pack… really read it… it’s modo 202, and 301 upgrade. You are getting 2 payouts on modo for nothing.

The way I see it is that people choose not to read rules in depth due to laziness. And maybe it would be nice not to be so tetchy.

You know, it’s fine to have an opinon to be insulting is unacceptable.

NOWHERE, in the rules does it say you have to buy anything? NADA, ZILCH. All I have asked is you download a FREE DEMO to incorporate with your 3D package. In return you get a chance to win over $1000 in stuff.

Every contests has rules or stipulations. I didn’t think downloading something free was that inconvenient to try and get people to try something new.

Hehe, if I download a 30 day demo of a product to enter a contest, Im going to be spending the first couple weeks just learning how to use the software, so I know for a contest, Im already gimped going in. And honestly, thats something I might be willing to do, if the subject matter were a bit more open and it was something I was allowed to have fun with. But youve got everyone working towards the same end model.

Um, yeah. Im sure it had nothing to do with who you were able to get donate a prize for your contest. No foul here, just dont go insulting people’s intelligence.

Lets face it…its an advertisment/promotion for Modo…which is fine…but this should probably go in the “other commercial applications discussion” thread.

I beleive you are making a bigger deal out of this then it should be. It’s a contest for fun and with a great prize I don’t see why there should be such conflict. Yes initially we were unclear about the usasge of other applications in conjunction with Modo but that has been corrected and people seem pleased. As for the statement reguarding this being advertising…well of course it is. Every contest is about adverstisment otherwise there would be no prizes. We have had other contests and awarded other applications as prizes but this time we wanted to try something new and kind of make it even for a lot of users since we have novice and professionals entering. If it works, hey great! If it doesn’t then we’ll take it into consideration when we have our next contest. I hope this is clearer.

The contest is not about making the same model and texture, it is very open. The spider is the main subject of the scene but you are able to create anything else you want, put it in any situation or just focus your time and skills on making the best looking spider and create fine details and textures. The spider can be mechanical, can be organic what ever your imagination creates is perfectly acceptable and we encourage people to stray from the common.

No ones making a big deal about it. I wish you the best of luck with your product promotion. But you SDM types were spinning like tops on a couple issues, and I thought there should be clarification.

However, this is the Zbrush community forum, on the official zbrush boards dedicated to the promotion of Zbrush…not an independant forum like yours… and this is a Modo promotion. Despite the spin, I wouldnt be free to produce my entry using nothing but…oh…I dont know… Zbrush .

We have a thread dedicated to the goings on and promotions of other commercial applications, and it can be found here:

http://www.pixolator.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=38585

Be it as it may this is not a discussion fitting for that thread, we did know about it I frequent this forum quite a bit as do other moderators. Subdivisionmodeling.com is not private we just do not focus on one certain application we cover all bases because we are about the modeling and sculpting process. We appreciate the clarification it did help us sort some things out for the contest, thank you for that!

You can use Zbrush with this contest and we do not mind as long as it is in conjunction with Modo. We are advocators of zbrush as subdivisionmodeling.com is Glen Southerns creation and vision.
