wow reminds me of the old days of pc games when it was mostly adventure games and mysteries.
I must admit, i am more a man for childrensbooks, than one for the ultranasty superheros/vilants.
So my pirate is not really one of the very bad ones, and i thought that it would be nice to have a counterpart for him. What i came up with is a young boy, who is allways playing tricks to the pirate. Please dont ask for the inner logic of that constellation, there is non so far, just a rough idea of a pirate which got hibernated by whatever reasons and awoke to the world of today, where he is confronted to that boy.
Enough spoken, here are the pictures.
And whats done in ZB allready.

Lots of texturework is done by now.
Next is the hairs, that will be a nice adventure to get them right!
Hi there,
this is going to be a promotional piece for a casual game i am working on. Other components like more vegetation in the background some crabs, and the pirate of course are still to come.
Cheers

Quick hint: Casual doesn’t mean cheap. Go ahead and zbrush sand around all the objects you placed into it, it will enormously improve the image.
And see that you can get some shadows into it!

Hi all,
here is the further process of my promotional piece for our casual game.
Its done entireley in zb, just a little color correction in Photoshop.
Still way to go, because i am currently try to figure out details about rendering and shadows and such stuff in ZB.
Cheers

hey im curious about something- i understand how helpful rendering with zbrush can be… i mean look at some of the multi -pass zbrush renders people have done here on detailed textured creature models. but this scene look like it should have been rendered in maya (i think it would look tons better with some maya raytraced shadows) care to explain why you made a whole scene (lots of subtools) for a zbrush render. zbrush is great for making objects and texturing them, but when it comes to rendering multiple objects at once i advice u step out of zbrush to get better object placement, better light control, (mentalray) etc
Ohhhh, how should i explain without me get going …
First of all, i am on a very small budget, and i am not wasting it, to make the autodesk shareholders happy. I know, thats not very rational, but thats one thing which triggers my behaviour.
Then: Again, because of my very tight budget, i am working with hardware, which is beyond good and evil. ZBrush performes well on it, Maya with all its nasty things under the hood, does not. Its not even getting close to what i can do with zBrush. To assemble a scene like this in Maya would be simply impossible on my computer.
And: I am working with ZBrush sind version 1.5, and after a long time of beeing a admiring bystander, i now want to get to a point, where i archive some sort of quality in my zBrush work.
So, i try to get the best out of ZBrush as it is.

Still trying to use Zbrush as a illustration tool. In a next step, i will try to do that image in a multipass rendering way within Zbrush.

Still trying to utilise ZB for illustration.
I have the feeling as if i am making slow progress, what do you say?

As before,
i am focusing on ZB as a tool for illustration.
Here is my latest piece. Its called “Puberty … or when all you do seems to be wrong (at least in the opinion of your parents)”
Enjoy

hey. I think its pretty nutty that you are making all of these models and texturing them and compiling all of them in zbrush to render. I hear that you dont want to give your money to autodesk. But dont you want to get the most out of your 3d models? You obviously know how to use zbrush and can make various objects nicely. Then you say maya doesnt run well on your computer on top of that. It is my opinion that every 3d modeler should be willing to pay over $5,000 for decent computer and software licenses, then when the software is mastered, you will get your $5,000 back in the first month having a 3d job anywhere. maybe you just need some more ram? I always think people should learn maya or 3dsmax before learning zbrush. It is fundamentals of 3d
Heiner says that he’s using 3d as part of his Illustration work and that being the case, he has no need to buy the expensive Autodesk products imo. If he wanted to expand into animation/games then perhaps you’d have a point.
There are plenty of decent modelling and rendering alternatives to Maya and 3d Studio Max for digital artists that are much cheaper. Modo is one, and of course Blender which is free.
It is my opinion that every 3d modeler should be willing to pay over $5,000 for decent computer and software licenses
It is my opinion that not everyone has 5000$ lying around no matter how willing they are.
Are you going to give the guy a loan and wait around until he has learned everything you say he needs to and gets his first 5000$ job?
… but i dont want to use it! Despite the fact, that i hate their consumer and market politics, i see no need to use max or maya. I dont go into that in depth, because it will make me flame about that topic.
However, i am using Blender as my main 3D application, which is free and which kicks b***.
Also i disagree with your opinion: I am doing 3d for 25 years now, and not beeing such a hot shot like the guys from the top row, i still archive a certain quality, which puts me on a professional level.
In all my career, i never had a client, which was willing to pay a freelancer 5000$ for a job … for what reason ever. Since i have to maitain a family, i had to stick to realistic plans, and not that kind of (sorry to say, and that off course only my opinion) unrealistic strategy you are sticking to. I am happy. if it works for you (god bless you) but here in Germany, for me in particular, it works not.
Despite all this, i still think that ZB will let me make what i want, and when there is a Blender GoZbrush, i am happy and can do what you suggest and save the 5000$ bucks.
Cheers
Heiner
ok fair enough. of course i agree that there is alternatives to maya and 3dsmax, and you are right, i am lucky that i was able to live in my moms house while doing construction jobs to save the money for my software. I didnt mean it about freelance jobs that pay $5,000, i meant to say that knowing the standard software that studios use will help you get a job at a production studio- which pays pretty damn well if its a good studio. But of course if you do not want this type of job, then it doesnt apply to you.
-pro4210, I never had 5,000 lying around, i had to work hard to slowly save money, but i did spend way over 5,000 out of my own pocket. But like i said, im fortunate that i have a supportive parent who believes in my future career, and im young with no kids
Hi there,
another small illustration, using existing tools and toying around with the fiber material. Fiber is a really cool enhancement of ZB, i like it a lot.
By the way: The eggs are so called Surprise eggs (Ü-Eier). Its a chocolate egg with a capsule inside, and the capsule contains a toy. A very popular sweet here in Germany, in a couple of other european countrys as well i guess.
Cheers
Heiner
scary !!!
lol…love yer pic. Kinder eggs are awesome…when I was stationed in Baumholder Germany I used to get them all the time. Do they still put kewl little toys inside? Well at any rate you do have a sweet trap set
