Heiners Stillers work arena

Ok, that will be my little work in progress thread.
I am by far not as good as a lot of artists here, but
i feel that i am making progress, and this i want to show.
What i expect is off course criticism but also some
(hopefully) encouraging.
I want to focus on ZBrush as a tool for illustration.
Regarding my works: Let me start with Charon. That is
a host character in a horror comic series, published by a
guy i know.
Base meshes are done in Silo, and a little touchup on
his eyes in Photoshop.

I added a posed hand, a good way to learn how zspheres work as rigg, and a lantern.
I will add also a candle into the lantern.
I am thinking of placing a light on a position inside the lantern cage in order to get according shadows. Not sure if that works, however, at the moment i constrain myself to staying inside of ZB.

… and a little help from Photoshop.
After all, there is progress. My understanding of ZB is growing.

This is a rough scribble of my next project.
Dark room, wooden worn table, treasure map, some gold coins and a nasty looking pirate. A composition easy enough, well known, but allways draws attention.
What do you think.

Pirate Picture.jpg

Heh classic. The table needs a bottle of Rum next to the glasses and coins. I’d personally like to see some haning ropes in the background as well. Nice concept mate. My advice, try a render with the pirate looking at the map as well.

Art On!

The first step is done, here is the arm i made. It allready has a rough texture, but with the material i am still looking which one from the Matcap library is best.
Next pieces will be the other acessorys like the coins, the dagger and some other bits and pieces which i left out of the scribbly because i am lazy b***trd … hehehehe.

I think you’ve got a good start here - keep working at it!

The arm in particular is looking nice - the tricep is a little funny looking but overall it has a good sense of anatomy to it, especially in the hand.

The cloth on the first figure could use work, though I know little to nothing about doing clothing myself so I wouldn’t really be the one to ask about that. I could say less overall big lumps in it like on the head and more fine wrinkles, but like I said keep going! :+1:

After all my pirate needs a face. This will be the base for it.
I will exaggerate this rather realistic face, to get the expression i am looking for.

Its getting farther. Now some make up for the face.
Next step will be his cloth. I am planning to give him a nice
leather west.

Slowly i start to put together the pieces.
To be honest, i know all the details, but sometimes i am affraid to
use them … maybe because i am affraid that i can not do
what i want to do, and that i again i am not able to turn my visions
into the picture i have in mind.
I had that so often with other software, and then experienced failure, because of shortcomings of the software, because of shortcommings of my hardware, and sometimes bcause of the lack of talent on my side.
With ZBrush, so far, i was able to rule out the first two problems, and i am stuck with the third …

… but i could not resist to do a inbetween assembling of my scene so far.

… and i work, improve, andslowly the model gets better, at least thats what i think.

Nice work so far. A couple of CnC posts on my part though.

I would remove all of your color data (tool>texture>colorize) and focus on the forum of the models you work on. The last thing I do is texture…if I even do at all, the color gets in the way of the sculpt. Bad color can ruin a sculpt, and a bad sculpt can run the texture. They both have to be working. Once you have the sculpt down to where it needs to be, then you can add the color to “help” the image.

The cloth that you have on his body right now is good…it just isn’t how a shirt would fold and fall on a person. Look at reference whenever you’re sculpting. Do you think the Masters just pull this stuff out of their heads? We all look at reference, even if you’ve done it a million times before, it never hurts to base it on real life…if that is what you’re going for. Anyway, put a loose shirt on and take some pictures, or get a friend to take pictures, or wear the shirt. Or just look online for images of people wearing the type of clothing you’re trying to emulate.

Watch the forms on his arms, right now his triceps are waaaayyy to big in the posed shot. You have to remember that muscles move, contract and expand. In the shot his triceps should be relaxed and his biceps should be flexing.

Anyway, keep at it, the only way to improve is to try, try again…rinse…repeat.

Great start though

wow reminds me of the old days of pc games when it was mostly adventure games and mysteries.

I must admit, i am more a man for childrensbooks, than one for the ultranasty superheros/vilants.
So my pirate is not really one of the very bad ones, and i thought that it would be nice to have a counterpart for him. What i came up with is a young boy, who is allways playing tricks to the pirate. Please dont ask for the inner logic of that constellation, there is non so far, just a rough idea of a pirate which got hibernated by whatever reasons and awoke to the world of today, where he is confronted to that boy.
Enough spoken, here are the pictures.

And whats done in ZB allready.

Lots of texturework is done by now.
Next is the hairs, that will be a nice adventure to get them right!

Hi there,
this is going to be a promotional piece for a casual game i am working on. Other components like more vegetation in the background some crabs, and the pirate of course are still to come.

Quick hint: Casual doesn’t mean cheap. Go ahead and zbrush sand around all the objects you placed into it, it will enormously improve the image.

And see that you can get some shadows into it!

Hi all,
here is the further process of my promotional piece for our casual game.
Its done entireley in zb, just a little color correction in Photoshop.
Still way to go, because i am currently try to figure out details about rendering and shadows and such stuff in ZB.
