Here’s a head of a good friend of mine in a seriously bad mood. What needs improvement here? Does the topology check out? I’m an aspiring character modeler, so please help me rip this apart.

The topology is fine for the most part, although the loops around the neck muscles are a bit weird. Generally, in sculpting, the best check for good topology is if the geometry is being cooperative when you try to sculpt. If the edgeloops follow the major shapes that you are trying to make, it’s working fine.
As for the model, it’s pretty good. It’s got a nice expression, and I like that you turned his head. That always gives a pose more life. The lips are a little too hard, I think. Also the back of the jaw by the ear seems to have disappeared. I think that could get a little more shape.
One note, I would post the pic not as an attachment, but put it in your actual post. You still upload it, but then copy the link into the text window. If it stays as just an attachment, we can’t see the image when we are in the process of commenting.
Hope that helps! Happy sculpting!
Thanks for the advice, midost, especially for the topology tip! Here’s a retopologised version of the head.

Hey sandalman, Looking good so far, its hard to judge your sculpture without knowing what your friend looks like, but I have a few general suggestions.
I think that the ear is a little too far back on the head, Ideally it should be located around the middle of the head.
I also think the mouth and lips are a little too flat, think of the lips as being wrapped around a cylinder.
Great work so far
