HD Geometry question ????

Hey everyone. My question is to understand why I am unable to subdivide passed 8 or 9 million polygons. I would like to be able to work with 40 or 50 million and I know it’s possible to reach 1 billion… Which leaves the question of why can’t I even pass 10 million. I’ve changed the memory options in preferences but nothing seems to make a difference. I’m running on Vista, have a really good graphics card and 4 gigs of RAM.

Can any one help me out and shed some light, Please.

There is a difference between geometry and HD geometry.

Tool>Geometry divides regular geometry. On most systems you’re not going to be able to divide again after you’ve topped 4 or 5 million polygons as doing so would result in 16 to 20 million polygons. A 9 million poly model will hit 36 million when divided.

Tool>HD Geometry is used for high definition work. You must be at the highest subdivision level of your model. You then press the DivdeHD button to add high definition levels to the model. Once the model has been subdivided with HD geometry, you hover the cursor over the area that you wish to work with and press the A key to enter HD sculpting mode. Much of your model will disappear, leaving only a number of HD polygons that your computer can handle in real-time. Sculpt that area, then press A again to return to normal visibility.
