This cannot currently be done.
But if you think about it, there’s a very good reason why. A 4K texture has about 10-12 million pixels that are actually used by the texture (depending on the UV mapping). For most computers, you do not need to use HD unless you’re going beyond 10-12 million polygons. So the HD sculpt would have more detail than the texture could actually hold.
That’s what I suspected. We were exploring some different ideas here the other day, and as usual, I took a little side trip to crazy town. Thanks for your help!
