HD detail from bump map?

Hiya. Hope this aint been answered too many times already - couldn’t find it if it has. So I was wondering - HD geometry seems fun enough to work in and to eventually generate a bump/displacement map; but what if I wanted to start with a bump and turn all its little details into HD geometry? (And then tweak and export it all out.)

Seems the displacement-tool options just go dark when one enters HD sculpt mode, and that was about as far as my imaginative brain took me. Any pointers?

Displacement and bump maps cannot currently be applied to HD geometry. You might be able to apply the map as a texture, derive a mask from it and then use a deformation or sculpt through the mask. That’s the only thing I can think of.

Heh, guess you can’t have everything. Guess I’ll try it out as you said - or perhaps I could make a couple of split-up proxy-meshes, displace those and then project the detail onto the HD geometry. Heh. Well, thanks for the advice, anyhow!
