Has Group By Normals been changed?

Hi Everybody!
Hya ZBer!!!

I use (ussd to use) Group By Normals under the PolyGroup Pallet all the time, its one of my favorite things in fact. Under 4R6-P2 however I get an error telling me I am going to have a lot of polygroups (this is WHY I am using it) and then it does something new and bad: it fails to work giving me a few tiny groups that have nothing or at least very little to do with the shape of the mesh.

Is there a way to get it to do what it used to do and suppress that annoying message?

Cheers!
And thanks!

What angle setting are you using?

Lots of different angles, mostly under 10 degrees or so.
It used to work great…

I didn’t see a lot of difference between 4R5 and 4R6. In 4R6, you do get the warning that you are going to exceed 1000 polygroups, but if you click that, it still performs the operation. In the example below, I did a quick sculpt in 4R5 and saved the ZTool so I used the same tool in both versions. As you can see, just about the only difference is the colors of the polygroups.

? How many versions can you run, past 2-3 or what. Earlier versions had to be deactivated I thought…

I’m on 4R6 P2 and I still have and can still run 4R5 and 4R4 P2. You don’t have to deactivate the previous ones. I usually keep the previous one and delete the third. I just havn’t got around to deleting 4R4 P2 yet.

Hmm, 4 is deactivated. , 4R2 opens as 4R3, 4R4 is hung right now. 4R5 works as does 4R6P2. But why look back when we have lots of great additions?

Before my old computer died I had all of them and they worked fine, that is all from 4.0 to what ever was before 4R5…

Anyhow here is what I see with the same sort of test you did ZBer, its totally different and not working:

Any thoughts on that?
All settings are exactly the same.

|I should mention that the one from 4R6 is actually one of the best results I have gotten from it so far, there was another that was total chaos and I loved it (even though it was dead wrong) but while I was playing with it I crashed ZBrush by making too many polygons and trying to duplicate them…

Oh silly me!|

I just tried the same test again using the Demohead.ztl and there was a difference with how polygroups were assigned in 4R6. In 4R5, I had the tolerance set to 5, but in 4R6, I had to set the tolerance to 7 to get similar results.

If your ZBrush is acting really wacky, maybe a re-install might be necessary. You already downloaded the full installer so if all else is failing, give that a shot, or start a support ticket and see if they have any answers.

Crap…
I was afraid of that , I suck at following instructions and get lost at the part where it tells me to skip to the part for people with no internet access.

Thanks for the help you guys!
I hope it works, I will try it tomorrow if nothing stupid (like work) crops up.

A support ticket makes sense too, but I hate bothering them, you guys are sort of like… Um… I don’t know, older brothers or something.
GRIN!

Cheers!
