Harsh transition when using Transpose

Hi,

I’ve noticed that no matter how much I blur a mask, a harsh transition keeps appearing when I use the Transpose Move tool:

I’ve tried changing the Brush curve, but to no effect.

Do I maybe have some mode turned on without knowing? AccuCurve isn’t active.

This is what happens in Blender, which seems more logical to me:

Thanks,

Metin

Ah, the solution turns out to be inverting the mask, blurring the inverted mask as well, then inverting the mask again and start moving.

Apparently the blur only affects the masked part, not the average of masked and unmasked area, causing a sharp curve in the mask that becomes apparent when transposing.

So, to wrap it up:

Hello @MetinSeven

This probably has to do with how you are blurring your mask.

If you are blurring the mask by Ctrl-clicking on the mesh, you’ll notice it only blurs up to the original masking border, but does not blur the masking onto any points that were not already masked. This will result in that kind of transition.

However, if you blur the mask with the “Blur Mask” function in Tool> Masking, it will blur in both directions, including onto points that were not previously masked. This will result in a softer transition.

It may also be easier to get a smoother transition on geometry that is slightly lower in polycount. It will require less blurring to spread the mask sufficiently, and the mesh will be less sensitive to abrupt transitions or distortion. The mesh can be subdivided to smooth after you define the curve to your satisfaction.

Good luck!

Very interesting, thanks! This explains why I didn’t recall this behavior, as I’ve used the BlurMask button for years, and always thought Control + clicking was a shortcut to that function.

Technically speaking, Ctrl-clicking on the mesh actually results in “Shrink mask” operation.

Wow, didn’t know that. Will keep that in mind and move the blur button to my custom UI. Cheers.

Or you could assign a hotkey to BlurMask. I’ve assigned it to the ‘+’ key, SharpenMask to the ‘-’ key, and I’ve assigned GrowMask and ShrinkMask to Shift and ‘+’ / Shift and ‘-’

This is very convenient for quick repeating of operations like BlurMask.
