Halloweensh Part 2

There it is, finally I got around to make the promissed “part 2” of my Halloween contrib. It’s a little different from what I originally had in mind, but eversince the ZbornToy I can’t stop trying crazy stuff.

In this one I’ve combined ordinary shading with transparency and caustics far heavier than ever…so far. Rendertime for this one is the longest one I’ve head so far, because the image had been 3000x4000 and all the transparency. The render took about 1.5minutes, which is an eternity for me by now.

I havn’t yet made a real nice post to introduce the ZbornToy to you, but I think you all know about it already. In case anyone still doesn’t, check it out at our site: www.taronites.com

I’ve been following DigitalFreaky’s posts and work and it’s getting more and more wicked. The lastest stuff he just showed me is completely out of control brilliant and he really makes me proud in everyway. I think I can’t show our plug-in as well as he does! :o

By the way, just so you know, this image has only used two pieces of software: Zbrush and AfterEffects-with-ZbornToy
(well, I scaled and saved it out of photoshop, but that doesn’t count.)

All the Best to all of you, (I’m almost ashamed to put something next to all of your great work!)

Taron

Heya Taron! As usual your characters drive my menthal endorphines to new realms!
This piece has an amazing feel to it…it’s disturbing but on the otherside bizarre! The jelly-green-blood it reminds me of a sorta alien mineral!
Oh, and the transparent huge brain-watermelon-groove-thing? uhhhh I don’t have words to explain the originality of it :o
Laterz!

Fab

Ah…I forgot, I originally wanted to make his a WIP (this morning), but then just finished him off. However, I liked the little inbetween a lot…especially the teeth, so I’m going to post it here anyway…even if it’s chronologically wrong. Hope you don’t mind…

Taron

This one actually rendered in exactly 1 minute!

Love it Taron!

Great Work.

Yummy zombie watermellon brains! Wonderful work Taron!

Hi Taron,

This outstanding work!

You say 1.5 mins for a render…that’s too long? What app are you rendering in?

TD

rendered in After Effects using the ZbornToy !
Or has that been a rethorical question?

Taron,

I totally dig the green translucent head. Wow!

I figure this is going to turn out awesometacular, so I gave you 5 stars. You also got them for going back an reworking something that had a lot of potential. I can tell its going to be something special. Although I want to see some animation with this guy! Very amazing portfolio btw, your a freelance?

Hey, thanx! And thanx everybody!
Yeah, sometimes I do some freelancing, but ever since I’ve started the ZbornToy I basically focused on it completely. We’re hoping very much that it will become at least somewhat a financial success, because the amount of really cool and progressive ideas has accumulated to a point where it would be next to a crime if I had to drop them for some stressful gigs that won’t help anybody but my little family’s survival. Some freelance jobs can be a lot of fun, though.

Hmmm…animating the guy…hmmm, hmmm, hmmm…I could. I might. But there are a lot of things I have to do right now to make sure I gave my best to show everybody the plug-in and make it understandable what crazy things it can do!
I’ve started this little series that explains the basics of it, but so far I just made part 1. It only takes me a few hours to make them, yet, there’s so much going on right now, that I hardly get push them out as fast as I want to.

Oh, you want to see part 1?

ZbornToy - EXPLAINED - part 1
(quicktime [v7.1.3] - 6.7Mb)
What’s really neat about it is, that the whole thing is done with it. It’s a showcase series, which hopefully covers a lot of the spectrum of possibilities with it. I personally love the rendering of Zbrush stuff the most, though, but even doing title & design stuff is tremendous fun!

Anyway, thanx again for the great response already! I’ll see that I add more stuff about the Halloweensh. I might even make some maps and projects available for you guys to experiment with. I highly recommend, however, that you try your own stuff with the plug-in. It’s pretty amazing, you’ll see!

Taron

realy nice surprise this early in the morning, got any more of those crazy monsters ?

I may try it out with my anatomy study. To see if I can get the effect I want. However one thing I noticed from the video is that the plug in takes the pixel value= depth. So couldn’t an Ambient Occulusion pass be use in stead to extract the render information? Or does the zdepth work best.

ambient occlusion instead of z-depth? Eh, ambient occlusion doesn’t give you any information about the object, really. You couldn’t figure out what is where, because everything would be relative. Think of it like this, if you had a ball with a hole sitting in the foreground and one sitting in the background, you could not distinguish between which one of them is in the front or in the back. Now you may ask yourself, what is that hole for… …eh… …it suddenly lost relevance, while I gave the explanation, hehe.

Anyway, the z-depth gives you “REAL” information about all the objects. It’s a clear record of the position of each pixel in space! Therefore I can render lighting, shadows, ambient occlusion (to a degree), refractions, even caustic projections, everything! It’s practically like the front half of every visible geometry. That’s also a hint about the limitations! It’s really just a relief renderer, so no reasons to get any illusions that this could ever replace a full render engine. BUT what you see above is one thing you can do with it super great and super quick. There are countless other things you can do with it and the nature of the plugin is so brutally open, that your imagination can take yoursef anywhere with it. It’s totally fantastic for non-photorealistic-renders, too! That’s another great thought! Beautiful for any painterly effects as well. And you can come up with your own signature look altogether.

I’m still thinking about more ways to make the range of it greater for 3d application. I saw this dragon a few hours ago and that reminded me of the wing-translucency. Since Reliefs can’t have such slim membranes, such things would have to be definable somehow. My gears are already going for additional tools in that context. But I have some strong ones already that I need to do first!

Thanx for checking it out! I can really promiss you, you won’t regret it!

For your first test, follow the little tutorial I put on the website. Go to the tutorial page and look at it! It shows you how to get your maps out of Zbrush!

Taron

okay that small movie that taron posted that explains all of that, its just one piece, go to the site and download the tree tutorial, its quite impressive, for someone like me thats still thinks that mentalray is for people with voodoo powers only. that little plugin is a gem.

“video tutorial - ZbornToy basic shading” and
“video tutorial - ZbornToy on after effect’s Vector Paint”

I was just in the mood to play around with “painting” my own lighting, which is another fun thing to do with it. The results are REALLY freaky. I mean…they look almost conventional, but with this strange kick. Check out this render. Took 13 seconds at 1500x2000 and is with ambient occlusion.

yeah he looks like a different person now

Heeh, yes…It reminds me of the sort of “Night out” and “The morning after” type of thing!

Can’t wait to try it :stuck_out_tongue:
p/s Hey, where is the top row? I see nothing

Thanx, Leshiy! Not sure if it’s worthy or different enough? I really enjoy the guy, though…hehehe…he’s got a certain happiness. Not sure, if I’m the only one seeing it, or caring about it for that matter…hehe…but yeah. Looks like the thread fell from graces, too, though… ah well.

Anyway, here are a few more quick renders. Too much fun to play around with it. Playing with painterly looks a little more. Not too obvious, but just a bit of a fantasy shading…

This is so awesome Taron. I almost didn’t want to post my WIP progress images last night because of how great this work is.

You really know how to make me feel like a mortal to the deity quality of your work.

Again, this is so great.
