Hair in Zbrush

Hey everyone, I was working on a bust sculpt of a woman and started to wonder how to go about sculpting her hair. I’ve seen a number of tutorials where the artist masks off a certain portion of the scalp, then extracts it as a subtool and wondered if this was the way to go? Also, the problem with this woman’s hair is it overlaps the forehead at the front. Are there any good tools/brush presets that I should use for sculpting hair like this? For example the slash or snakehook tool to get those loose hair threads at the front. Here are the reference pics being used:-

Thanks in advance! :+1:

it really depends on how you work best. like you said, most of us do hair as a different subtool so so you have more control over the mesh. For what you’re trying to do I would certainly use a subtool.

Thanks for the reply  I tried an extract but I still wasn’t entirely sure how to make the ‘fringe’ of the hair, I tried messing around with the rake and slash tools but it didn’t produce very good results. What kind of workflow do you use when it comes to creating hair like this? Would like to hear from a few people on how they’d tackle this kind of problem.

don’t use the extract…or if you do use it in combination with some Zsphere chains to get the “fringe” look you’re going for. You can create as many of the chains as you want to make the thin independent hairs, and then use a larger mass to make the bulk of the hair.
