Grunbeld: A Berserk-Inspired Redesign
The image above showcases an advanced version of the character’s skin shader, an aspect I later revisited and refined to enhance overall realism. (Rendered using V-Ray)
Project Overview
Welcome to my latest creation: a bold reimagining of Grunbeld from the iconic manga series Berserk. This isn’t just fanart - it’s a complete overhaul of Grunbeld’s armor and aesthetic, while staying true to the character’s essence.
Key Features:
- Imposing presence
- Strong silhuette
- Manga-accurate facial features
- Fresh take on a classic character
Design
My approach blends inspiration from Grunbeld’s traditional appearance with a hefty dose of personal interpretation. The goal? Maintain the core of who Grunbeld is while bringing a fresh perspective to his design.
Color and Ambient:
A carefully crafted mix of warm and cool tones with serious undertones, capturing both:
- Grunbeld’s fiery spirit
- Berserk’s somber ambiance
These choices reflect the gritty, intense world Grunbeld inhabits.

Creation Process
Bringing Grunbeld to life in ZBrush involved a diverse toolkit:
- Standard_Layered_Scales: Crucial for the intricate, repetitive armor details
- ClothPull: Added nuance and texture
- IMM brushes: Instrumental in crafting finer design aspects
These tools allowed me to infuse depth and texture, bringing Grunbeld to life in a way that I hope does justice to Berserk’s complex world.
