Group Loops and UV's

I am trying to find a way around the following problem.

I made a model and at one stage I wanted to clean up edges around some detailing by using GROUP LOOPS (just like in the Helmet tutorial from ZBrush website).

The thing with the group loops is that you can’t have any subdivisions to use them and because I wanted to add some really detailed thing at highest subdivision level of my model so I had to delete all the lower ones.

The problem is that now I have my nicely detailed mesh with its 17mln polygons and all the nice polypainting on it I can’t really make any use of it. I need to make some UV’s to export the texture but with such high polygon count it is impossible. (I dried Decimation Master but this is not the way to go as once the model is decimated I am loosing a lot of polypaint detail).

I can always remodel this model again it is not a big deal at this point but for the future reference how can I make a use of Group Loops at high detail without loosing the low subdivision levels.

Not certain about this but I would say you have two options.

Firstly, not sure this would work, if you saved your previous tool, load your previous tool; project the the new high detail version onto it at a high sub division level.

Or, retopologise your new one

I think I will just stay away from group loops in detailing stage it is a good tool but at the starting point. I went back and remade my base mesh in max with most of the loops I need for the main detail the rest will be just sculpt in zb, this way I will keep the low subdivision in tact.
