Grooming long fibermesh hair

Does anyone have any tips and tricks about grooming long fibermesh hair? I’m using polygroups so am grooming sections at a time and have reduced my front collision tolerance to about 20 so the hair lays flat against the head. I may be being too ambitious here, but I’m trying to pass a section of hair through the hands of my figure, as if she’s holding it. I am just having a really hard time getting an angle on the secret of the groom long brush. It keeps pulling the hair out along the z axis as I brush down. If I get the hair arranged in the hands then the roots have gone all haywire. Is there a way to smoothen the hanks of hair, and stop the whole length changing when I groom sections of it? Is there a way to mask the figure so the hair doesn’t disappear into her body? I like brushing long hair as much as the next gal, but this is crazy :stuck_out_tongue:

It can be a bit of a beast to tame, and I think everyone has their own way of working with it. All we can do is tell you what works for us and hope it helps. So, personally I use any grooming brush at a very low setting. Also I set the Brush>Firbremesh to preserve the length of fibres while I work. I rotate the object so the fibres don’t pull outward when grooming. Sometimes the Move brush works better than Groom brushes.

Finally, when I do manage to make a hair that I think will be useful again (for instance I have some nice stubble, eyelash,
eyebrows and moustach presets), I save the preset. While on the subject of presets, a thread for posting them here (like the one for Insert Mesh Brushes) would be a good idea.

Thanks Dillster. I hadn’t tried other brushes and I can see the difference with using a less strong brush. Do you happen to know why, when I open a file with fibermesh hair I’ve previously created, it is opened as default material (red wax) and loses its properties as hair? I can still groom it, etc., but it doesn’t render with the sheen and refraction of hair. It looks like the hair of the african peoples who coat their hair in mud. I’m not using any fill or colour commands. It looks fine before I save and close.
