Gnomon vs Digital Tutors?

Hello everyone. I wanted to start this thread before starting spending my money on Gnomon DVD’s or Digital Tutors DVD’s. I wanted to ask which one you think it’s better? For instance if I want to start learning Maya or Zbrush from zero?
I only whatched few dvd’s from each of these comanies and I am not sure which one it’s better, even though at some point I would prefere Digital Tutors. I only compared introduction to Zbrush from each of them and I realized that they are absolutely complementary: I’ve learned some thing from DT that are not explained at Gnomon and viceversa but I enjoyed more the DT DVD because it’s more… educational and fluent. Meats Meier it’s such a great artist but not such a good teacher…
Also I was totally dissapointed by the Character Modeling and Texturing for production from Gnomon. Ian Joyner speaks too fast (and I am not a native english speaker) and the dvd works on a high speed which makes it impossible to follow! I tried to catch some things but I had to go forward and rewind many times and than pause to see what he’s clicking there! I quit trying to follow him… It’s impossible! It seemed to me like he was explaining the workflow for himself… But this is just my oppinion.
Now I want to buy some dvd’s about Maya and I don’t want to be dissapointed again… So what would you recommend?
Many thanks in advance for your feedback.

The founder of the Gnomon school, Alex Alvarez, is an excellent teacher in my opinion. He has a tutorial, Intro to Maya, that is very good. You can download one chapter at a time which really helps. You can see if you like the instructor and methods.

Well I forgot to mention that I really love Alex’s style of teaching. I have the head sculpting DVD which is really brilliant! Following that one made me understand the real workflow of zbrush. But unfortunately he doesn’t teach on all the DVD’s  But there are other instructors that dissapointed me… And again this is just my own oppinion!

When I started out using Zbrush, I found Digital Tutors easier to begin with. Once you get decent and know the basics of Zbrush, Gnomon seems to teach the advanced stuff better. It all depends (how I see it anyway) on your skill level on which is better.

I also like Digital Tutors. Justin has a nice style – slow and clear – especially on the later date DVDs where he tempered his voice from “broadcaster” to a more normal sounding instructor.

I would recommend two Digital Tutors Maya DVDs for the beginner (which I happen to be). One is the interior modeling and the other is the urban environment modeling. Both cover a lot of modeling techniques. They usually have a clip on the website that you can preview. At least that gives you some idea if it’s right for you.

Gnomon all the way

I agree with nfollmer. Gnomon seems to have good content, but most all of it supposes you already have a fairly good grasp of the program and its features beforehand. For this reason I personally have not done much with the Gnomon material, but I’d certainly start with the DT stuff.

Ok guys thanks alot! It really helped! Now I decided: introductions with digital tutors and advenced with gnomon  Thanks alot!

Hello everyone

My name is Johney Russia. So, I highly add my comments for those which are saying that Digital Tutor is best than GNOMONOLOGY.But,but.....,but , if we talk about the lecture & the way of teaching then DT don't give any useful & Production lecture to the students. Actually, they teach only to the biggener. But, if we talk about GNOMONOLOGY. They teach not only to the student but also to Proffessionals. Beacause, all of the Instructres at GNOMONOLOGY have Industry Experienced as well as teaching experience. They don't only show their workflow to every student ,Artist etc. but also increase our Artistic Protentual by the Lecture about Production Pipeline. There is the Great thing is that when I watch GNOMONOLOGY's Lectures after that I feel more hi-fi Knowledge in myself.

I will show my work as soon as possible on Challenging form & explain in detail more about GNOMONOLOGY.
HOPE! all of you enjoyed the lecture & GREAT LUCK!
