Generating a base mesh...

1rst post…
In a discussion with other Zmen (and women), they emphasized the importance of the initial base mesh in sculpting a figure and recommended either Maya or Modo. I have been avoiding Maya because it seems like a massive program (sledge hammer) for a job that doesn’t need all the bells and whistles. I tried Rhino and exported/imported a obj file into Zbrush, which seemed to work, until using the smooth brush which broke the mesh apart. I find the meshes generated by Zspheres a bit clunky. Does anyone have insight on which programs to use for generating base meshes or a way to keep the Rhino mesh together? BTW my focus is on prototype work and not animation, so “water tight” is priority.

Bests,

What do you mean by “broke the mesh apart”? If gaps are appearing between polygons, then the model wasn’t welded when leaving Rhino.

I tried your suggestion, opened the file in Rhino, applied “weld” with an angle tolerance of 10, then saved it as an obj. The top images shows successful manipulation with the move tool and gaps from the smooth tool. The bottom image is the original file. Hmmmm…smooth_problem.jpg
