Hi, I am new here. I just started using Zbrush after watching Ryan Kingslien’s video. I know the nose is big, my son kept telling me to make it bigger. I have normalized it now, but I thought it was fun. The ears are too small and too far back, but with practice I think I can get better than that. Is there a better way to do eyes than just filling them in? At what point in a sculpt do you normally add them? Thanks for viewing.
looking pretty good
Ryan is a great teacher
once you’ve sculpted the eyes and the lids have enough resolution to hold the shapes
insert a sphere and transpose tool it in to place
mask off your original eyeball and invert the mask… now push it in or zsub it with a clay tool
once your appended eyeball is in place Subtool Master /mirror x-axis
BlackMath - Thanks for the tips they will surely help me. Ryan is definitely great. I feel like he is super thorough, and it is rare that I use a tutorial or class that doesn’t leave something out.
I couldn’t reply without another sketch.
I know the ear is wonky and the muscles around the mouth have issues. The eyes I have redone a lot and I am not completely happy with them. I have seen a lot of sculpted hair. Does Zbrush also have a way to do more realistic hair? I will also look it up, but if any of you have a specific tutorial that you know of that would be cool too.
I am going to try to add a helmet, mustache, and monocle. This is a character that my kids get to hear about at bed time.
Fancy Von Knightenstein. Ridiculous, but they love it.
Fur hair research Fibermesh tons of tutorials out there
What I would do is reduce the distance between the mouth and the nose, also maybe fill in the area of the maseter because he looks a bit like he is sucking through a straw. For the eyes just insert a sphere as a subtool and move it inside where you want it, then go to z-plugin/subtool master- and mirror it across the x axis. To make realistic hair you have to mask the area that you want there to be hair and then go to the fibermesh panel and click preview; play with the settings there and once you are done press accept, then use the groom brushes to comb the hair as you wish.
Thanks for the feedback. I knew something was wrong with the mouth area, but I couldn’t pin point it. I will flesh out the masseter as well.
I tried the fibermesh and it will be awhile of practicing before I get anything acceptable. Practice, practice, practice.
I have been using the DefaultDynaWax project. I will be trying the Zspheres after I have time to watch the videos, but I have noticed that people have a lot lower resolution that the Dynamesh. Are they typically starting their models in another program or are they getting their edge loops done in Zbrush?
When you see that they have a character or a face that has this really nice edgeflow around the eyes, mouth, nasal labial fold, etc, it means that they brought a base mesh from another 3d package. Now, you can have a base mesh from the z sphere that is very low res but it won’t have that nice edgeflow from the previous example. When you create a z sphere adaptive skin it actually has two subdivision levels already but the one you see in the preview and when you just create it is the second one.; if you want that same adaptive skin but lower res just bring it to level one subdivision after you make it. You can use the retopology that zbrush has ( where you append a zsphere to a ztool and then go to topology on the right hand side panel/ edit topology) and create that edgeflow for the head, then project the detail from the high poly mesh into the new low poly mesh.
@Aazv17 - Thanks for your help. I am looking into that.
In the mean time I have been having fun with Dynamesh. I think I went too far without a plan, but I am happy with the direction so far.
Couldn’t resist continuing on this sculpt tonight. I am really having a lot of fun.
This is my work from this weekend. I had a blast. The animal attempt showed me how important reference is. I was just going for a fox like creature nothing special, but wow did I keep have to rework things. The balls on the feet are Dynameshed because I didn’t know about “Backface Masking.” That will surely help in the future. I can’t wait for my third weekend with Zbrush.
It didn’t turn out as planned or expected, but fun nonetheless.
Here is a new one.

I was messing around with Zbrush again.
This is the same as above, but I removed the horns and just continued on with it.
Here is a work in progress. I know the arms are long. I eventually want to animate him and I would like to have him be able to reach above his head.
