Forum Organization

I am sorry if this has been addressed elsewhere, but I wanted to bring up the topic.

It seems like the forum is suffering from it’s own popularity. There is so much great work going on that it’s difficult to see it all. I was perusing through the posts and I went back 3 or 4 pages and it was posts that I had never seen before. This is odd because I come here every day.

I would like to propose making sub-forums to main, or just splitting out into new forum areas. See below for the proposed structural change. Rather than main:

Finished Works
Sketchbooks
WIP
Tutorials
Challenges

I also think the Beta Tester images should be deprecated into the other section.

This is by no means a criticism of the boards, but rather a suggestion that with the growth and popularity sometimes it’s difficult to keep track of all the great stuff.

Thanks

personally, I really like that suggestion  :+1:

The Questions and troubleshooting section should have questions categorized into separate sections such as (1) Modeling ( to include questions related to Zspheres, sculpting, retopologising, Masking, alphas, HD Geometry, transpose etc), (2) Texturing ( polypainting, UV’s, projection master for coloring etc.)

I know it might entail extra work as members might start posting in the wrong areas , and the posts will then have to be moved etc, but people ,for instance, looking for texturing related Q n A, can find all texturing related stuff under one heading. Saves people a lot of time while keeping things relevant and organised.

Just for the sake of clarity:

There already is a Tutorials forum.
There already is a Challenges forum.
The beta tester images are already in their own forum.

When you look at the main forum page where it lists all the forums, the four lines under “Main” are each separate forums. None of what’s in them appears in the actual Main Forum.

Also, more forums does not necessarily accomplish what you’d like. I already spend a significant amount of time each day moving threads that have been placed in the wrong forums. (In fact, I had to move this one into the Community forum. ;)) The more forums that there are, the fewer people who actually use the correct ones consistently. It’s sad, but true.

i have to say i like simplicity of the zc layout, compared to cgsociety or threedy (not knocking them) or many other forums with subcategories of subcategories seems more impossible to find things, also sometimes its better to not have it that way because you become surprised by things you would not see if you’re only focused in your fav subforum.

I appreciate the responses. I can also understand the reluctance to change.

It was just an idea. As I said before, I really enjoy this board and I wasn’t saying it was a bad layout, I just felt it could use a few more categories to help with organization.

The worst part about organizing something is to get everyone to follow that order. Thanks for listening
