Hi! it seems to me, in a far far past, that a small plug in was available, to use fonts in zbrush, and rework them,of course… I mean that if you import a text from other soft, like modo, you don’t have enough quads to sculpt the “block” of letters… If you use the “alpha” make 3d, you can easily sculpt the letters, but they aren’t very “clean”, sharp… thank you for help!!!
what is your question?
how to have precise, accurate , fonts , in zbrush, and sculpt them as far as needed?
Can you not import a mesh from Modo, turn off Tool>Geometry>Smt and subdivide as much as needed?
I don’t understand why,Marcus Civis, but the letters don’t subdivide “well”… I get 2 millions polys, and in despite that, I have always a “dirty”, not friendly, sculpting… not at all as a zbrush tool, really!
I think because of the complexity of the cage on any font that would be made in another 3D app, it would be difficult to make it work in ZBrush because you wouldn’t get nice even quad or tri polys. Retopology would probably be the answer but that would involve a considerable amount of work. Maybe using an alpha in Projection Master then try and piece something together from that.
There was a font plugin made for version 3.1 which you can get here, but I don’t know if it works in ZBrush 4.
Perhaps you can use Shadow Box. You’ll probably need to use a res of 512 or so:
- Load the ShadowBox512.ztl from Lightbox>Tools
- Clone the texture and export as reference.
- Create the text in Photoshop to match the texture.
- Import into the Texture palette and apply to the Shadow Box.
- Press Tool>Making>Mask by Intensity and Ctrl+click in SB to update.
- Draw a rectangle on the side to increase the extrude.

Thanks a lot for the workflow Marcus. That is a really good way of doing it. I was wondering how to get reasonably crisp tools out of Shadowbox and now I know. Once again…You Da’ man!
