flatten layers

hello! i don’t understand why, when flattening layers in render( palette, shadows seems to disfunction after; in fact, i use several layers, and texture each one, on black background; but if i merge after, in t(he layers palette, the black is “eating” parts of the precedent layers… i’ve tried to understand with the quicklinks, but must miss something… thank you for help! Friendly M.

Render>Flatten Layers only serves to determine whether ZBrush will render all layers together or if it will render just the active layer. Be default is is turned on to save time and system resources.

When merging layers, you should always first make sure to turn on Draw>MRGB and ZADD. Other settings can result in problems like what you’re describing.

Don’t worry much about what the layer thumbnail shows. The thumbnail shows all color on the layer – even what has fallen behind the clipping plane. As a result, merging layers will cause the thumbnail to get a little funky now and then. What really matters, though, is what you see on the canvas. The thumnail is just a reference so that you can more easily see what layer contains what part of your image.
