flat color material reverts to red clay when selecting black color.

Ive been doing a lot of low poly texture painting (polypaint) and this problem keeps popping up. I paint with Flat color material and when i select a 100% black color as soon as i update the view port with either painting a stroke or rotating the object the material switches to the default red clay material. Is this as designed or am i doing something wrong? I can get around it by picking a black that is not 100% black but more of a 90% gray.

Also i noticed that when i turn Symmetry off or on it will swap my current color to some other color. Which is very frustrating.

thx for your help

The Flat Color material is a special material in that if you paint or fill a model with it then it will take on the selected material. In fact, if you want to get rid of any embedded material then you simply fill with Flat Color.

To see what your model texture or polypaint looks like without material effects switch on Render>Flat.

To paint with Flat Color material so that it doesn’t update to the selected material, save a version of the Flat Color material to disk with a new name, select a different material and then load in the saved file. If you embed material this way you will need to load in the material to the same ‘slot’ each time you load the model, though if you want to use the material often save it to your ZStartup/Materials folder and it will load automatically.

HA! Ok thanks a lot. Can’t believe i never tried Flat render. And thanks i never knew how to get rid of a material either.

Thank you Marcus!!!
